"Ground Swell" is one of the most beautiful works by the American painter Edward Hopper. It depicts five young people aboard a catboat about to be reached by a gentle ground swell. The five are busy observing a bell buoy, also at the mercy of the incoming waves. They seem calm and curious, immersed in a dazzling blue light and not at all alarmed by the ringing produced by the buoy. Perhaps because that ringing doesn't exist, swallowed along with everything else by the immense solitude of that summer sea on the edge of reality. As in all of Hopper's paintings, absolute silence reigns, the inexorable protagonist of the poetic of this great master.

"Ground Swell," painted in 1939, was part of the Corcoran Gallery of Art from 1943 until 2014 when it was transferred to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it is still preserved.
