The painting reproduced here, "In the Days of Sappho," also known as "Rêverie," dates back to 1904 and is the work of the renowned Neoclassical painter John William Godward (1861-1922). Today, it is preserved in Los Angeles as part of the Getty Museum collections.
The setting and title gracefully evoke the charm of the ancient Greek world and the beauty of its poetry. Unforgettable is the stunning apricot-colored chiton worn by the young woman. The chiton was the quintessential garment of the ancient Greek world.
It was worn by both men and women and was available in various lengths, styles, fabrics, and colors, which—needless to say—reflected the fashions and tastes of the time.
