Measurements in inches

This refined composition is a painting — now in a private collection — attributed to the Viennese artist Josef Schuster (1812-1890). The artist is especially known for his stunning still lifes with flowers, a genre that was cultivated with incomparable richness and variety in 19th-century Vienna.

The reasons for such excellence were undoubtedly linked to the active collaboration between the Academy of Fine Arts and the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, a supplier to the Habsburg Court since 1718. During the 19th century, the Academy had established a specific course for floral painting aimed at ceramic production and inspired by the most fashionable decorative style of the time, the Biedermeier style.
