Antilia
The Antilia cushion is inspired by the legend of the island of the same name, where it is said that seven bishops took refuge after the Moorish invasion of Spain in the early 8th century.The exiles supposedly each founded their own city, so much so that Antilia was also known as the "Island of the Seven Cities."
The names of the cities were even known—Aira, Anhuib, Ansalli, Ansesseli, Ansodi, Ansolli, and Con—and their locations were regularly indicated in Renaissance portolans, the first of which was the 1424 map by the Venetian cartographer Zuane Pizzigano.
Christopher Columbus also believed in the reality of Antilia, considering it a useful stopover on the route he intended to follow to reach the Indies. He did not find Antilia, but he did discover something just as sensational...
