This work by the French painter Claude Lorrain dates back to the mid-17th century and illustrates the myth of the Cumaean Sibyl as narrated by Ovid in the Metamorphoses (XIV, 130-153).
The Sibyl is depicted sitting on a fragment of a column while showing the god Apollo a handful of sand grains she has just collected. With this gesture, she is expressing a wish that Apollo, having fallen in love with her, has promised to grant: to let her live as many years as the number of grains in her hand. Unfortunately, as often happens, wishes made in haste and without sufficient thought bring more trouble than benefit. The Sibyl, forgetting to ask for eternal youth along with eternal life, is destined for a slow and inexorable aging until she is reduced to just a voice.
The painting is now housed in the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.
