The work of the great painter Caravaggio, "Saint Francis in Ecstasy," was created between 1594 and 1595. Two versions of it are known: the first (reproduced here) is kept at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut. The second—at the Civic Museums of Udine—belonged to the very wealthy Genoese banker and art collector Ottavio Costa, who was already a patron of Caravaggio.

When Count Ottavio fell ill, he promised to give the Saint Francis to his friend and executor, the Udinese abbot Ruggero Tritonio. However, an unexpected recovery convinced the count to change his mind.

He decided to keep the original for himself and gift the abbot an exact copy. This latter version is believed to be the one housed in Udine, while the original—according to most critical studies—is the one in Hartford.
