Lyonesse, the legendary Breton island, is remembered primarily as the homeland of Tristan, the protagonist along with Isolde of one of the most beautiful myths in Celtic tradition. Often associated with Avalon, Lyonesse was a vast and flourishing land that was suddenly swallowed by the sea during a terrible cataclysm that exterminated its population and animals.
Fishermen from the Isles of Scilly—off the coast of Cornwall—tell how, even now, during stormy days, it is sometimes possible to hear the bells of the many churches of Lyonesse eerily ringing in the wind.
