Ex oriente lux
Ex oriente lux
"Ex oriente lux" is the Latin expression that, already in the late antiquity and medieval periods, identified the East as the cradle of human civilization. The motto was also accompanied by a play on words: "Ex oriente lux, ex occidente lex": from the East arose the light of knowledge, while the West—particularly referring to ancient Rome—created the legal instrument.
Today, this particularistic view is progressively giving way to a more extensive and comprehensive conception of the epistemological problem: knowledge and civilization have no cardinal points; they arise wherever there is intelligence, life, and charity.
