"Fatal Eggs" (Роковые яйца) is the title of an extraordinary novel by Mikhail Bulgakov, written in 1924, nearly thirty years before the famous Godzilla.
The protagonist is Professor Persikov, who, as the director of the Moscow Zoological Institute, makes a surprising discovery: a red ray capable of accelerating the growth of amphibians to rapid and gigantic proportions.
When used on eggs, it causes the unforeseen "resurrection" of monstrous reptiles with predictable and devastating consequences.
