This captivating painting, titled "Mischief and Repose," was sold by the artist in 1909 for a mere 175 pounds.
Having spent nearly a century in the antique market, it was auctioned by Christie's in London in 2008 for 181,250 pounds and is still in a private collection.

Before his suicide in 1922, Godward left a note filled with bitterness: "The world is not big enough for me and Picasso," regretfully alluding to how his work, deeply rooted in the Victorian neoclassical style, was declining. How wrong he was!
