This refined composition represents a painting—now in a private collection—attributed to the Viennese artist Josef Schuster (1812-1890). The artist is especially known for his stunning still lifes with flowers, a genre that was cultivated with incomparable richness and variety in 19th-century Vienna.
The reasons for such excellence were undoubtedly linked to the active collaboration between the Academy of Fine Arts and the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, which had supplied the Habsburg Court since 1718. In the 19th century, the Academy established a specific course for floral painting aimed at ceramic production, inspired by the most fashionable decorative style of the time, the Biedermeier style.
