Butterflies, with the wonder of their life cycle, have always been considered symbols of transformation, rebirth, and beauty, ideally and indissolubly linked to the concept of the soul. This significance is present in almost all human cultures throughout time and has been expressed in literature and art in ways always full of grace and delicacy.

One of the most beautiful examples is found in the work of Juan Ramón Jiménez, "Platero and I" (1914), for which the author won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1956.
Juan Ramón revisits the burial of the little donkey Platero, who was his faithful friend and playmate for many years. He imagines him in a meadow in Paradise and asks if he still remembers him: at that moment, a slender butterfly suddenly appears and flutters lightly, flying from lily to lily. It is the sweet soul of Platero responding to his friend's prayer in the most gentle and poetic way imaginable.
