In this masterpiece from 1850, John Everett Millais has vividly depicted the young Jesus in his parents' carpentry shop. A Jesus with unusual red hair is being doted on by his mother and an anxious father after injuring his hand while hammering a nail. Behind the apparent simplicity of this small domestic mishap lies the sad premonition of Jesus' future Passion, crowned by the triumph of the Resurrection.
A painting that caused scandal for its sharp realism mixed with the sacred theme. Even Charles Dickens was disgusted by it, describing the character of Mary as akin to an alcoholic: "so horrible in her ugliness that (...) she stood out from the rest of the company like a Monster from the most despicable French cabarets or the lowest gin shops of England."
It took the authority of the great John Ruskin—a refined art critic of the time—to defend the work along with the entire Pre-Raphaelite movement, of which Millais was a leading figure. And Dickens, rightly defeated, was forced to reconsider.
