The Island of Angels
The Island of Angels
It is said that once upon a time, the angels asked God for permission to choose a favored place on Earth where they could settle and establish a kingdom of peace and harmony with the creatures that inhabited it. After long searches, they found it on a captivating island surrounded by crystal-clear seas and enriched by paradisiacal vegetation.
It was then that Lucifer, consumed by envy, decided to rally his army of demons to unleash the first war that enchanted land had ever known against his hated rivals. The island's inhabitants retreated in fear to the mountains and hid inside massive stone towers - the nuraghi - to escape the furious battle between the two contending armies. Finally, the Archangel Michael, with a powerful stroke of his sword, unseated Lucifer, who fell disastrously from his horse and was forced to surrender. In the turmoil, his saddle fell into the sea and instantly petrified, thus giving rise to the promontory that is still known today as the Devil's Saddle.
That legendary place truly exists and is located in Sardinia: it is the Gulf of Angels that provides a marvelous panoramic backdrop to the island's capital, Cagliari.
