The author of this delightful painting from 1877, the great Swiss painter Albert Anker, seems to want to share with us a moment of sweetness and home relaxation. It is his little coffee break, accompanied by the classic sugar cubes and a spirit that we like to imagine is an excellent rum, smooth and rich with fruits and spices.
Anker loved to represent the joys of the table through exquisite paintings that also feature pastries, dried fruit, cheeses, pitchers of milk, and wonderfully crafted loaves of bread.
The work is housed at the Stiftung für Kunst, Kultur und Geschichte (SKKG) in Winterthur, one of the richest and most surprising private collections in Switzerland. The Foundation, created in 1980 by real estate entrepreneur Bruno Stefanini, has a collection of over one hundred thousand items, including masterpieces of art and historical artifacts, among them 6000 oil paintings.
