Mars Black is a special type of black pigment based on iron oxide, named in reference to the alchemical name for iron: Mars. It was introduced in the last century as an alternative to natural blacks derived from the combusted powders of organic materials.

It is completely non-toxic and excellent for its opacity, lightfastness, and permanence. Mars Black is favored by Neo-Expressionism and generally by all those who seek a bold, intense, and thick painterly mark.
