The flower of the night is the Bella di Notte (Mirabilis jalapa), also known as the marvel of Peru or four o'clock flower, belonging to the Nyctaginaceae family and originating from Latin America. Its beautiful blossoms open only at sunset and release an intense and pleasant fragrance that attracts nocturnal butterflies.
The epithet 'jalapa' seems to refer to the Mexican city of Jalapa Enríquez, from which an ancient and powerful laxative was extracted from the tubers of Ipomoea purga, very similar to those of Mirabilis. Purgative and spicy... The city of Jalapa is also famous for being the home of the Jalapeño pepper.
