In this magnificent country picnic, nothing is missing: ripe fruit, crispy and well-leavened loaves, two bottles of new wine, one of which is kept cool inside a cylindrical wooden container. Alongside the fresh foods, there is also something cooked in the tureen covered by a plate. The indispensable wicker basket contains a still-folded tablecloth and clean dishes ready for use.

The author of this masterpiece is Luis Egidio Meléndez, considered one of the best still life painters of the Spanish 18th century. Numerous examples of this genre—including our Picnic—were created around the 1770s for the collection of Charles IV of Spain, then Prince of Asturias and a great enthusiast of natural history. According to Meléndez himself, this series of paintings was meant to offer a colorful overview of the various fruits and vegetables typical of the Spanish tradition.

The painting is now housed in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
