The story is part of that fascinating horror/science fiction genre where mystery arises from a sudden and abnormal derailment of the community caused by the telepathic influence of alien entities.
King chose the nickname "Tommyknockers" inspired by an old English nursery rhyme. In this song, the Tommyknockers are actually mischievous mine-dwelling goblins, something very similar to Snow White's seven dwarfs but much more playful and impish.
